Painting

Would you like to know more about traditional painting skills?

These sessions are dedicated to developing skills in composition and perspective, creating the illusion of 3-dimensional form on a 2-dimensional flat surface. In this class we explore how different viewpoints affect linear perspective and horizon position while using vanishing lines to creative depth and perspective. We will be inspired by a range of artists and subject matter incorporating these rules of perspective, taking inspiration from the Renaissance, as well as contemporary Australian artists, such as Jeffrey Smart.

Tuesdays 1pm to 3:30pm.

The course runs for 4 weeks 4th, 11th, 25th Feb, 4th March

Once you have settled on a design, you will be introduced to a variety of cutting tools and explore different carving and cutting techniques. We will then mix up ink colours, ink up the cut lino blocks, and run them through the press to transfer your image onto paper. Safety is paramount in teaching you the techniques involved

Fabric Dyeing and Printing

Let’s play with fabric! We will explore the works of textile arts by using commercial and natural dyes on cotton and calico. After fabrics are dyed, we will then apply printing techniques such as lino blocks or screen printing. Would you like to design and make your own fabric for a garment or throw pillow? Maybe you have a piece of clothing that you would like to upcycle? Throughout this course we will learn about the effects that commercial and natural dyes have on fabric (Did you know that apple leaves make a gorgeous orange colour?). We will use Lino printing, embroidery, and embellishments to enhance our fabric. Finally, we will explore sewing techniques to construct your design. Your design can be simple and minimalistic or complex and dynamic.

Etching Workshop

A successful etching usually starts from a drawing that you are prepared to spend time scribing into the drypoint plate, then inking carefully. We will be printing through the press for maximum success. Beginners are welcome, but I recommend some drawing preparation to maximise your studio time.

Over three Saturdays you will learn, step by step, the techniques and materials involved in making an etching. You will work with like minded artists who enjoy taking time for art making and research.
