Clouds (and skies)

This fine example of cloud painting is only one of several we will look at during this course, which is all about skies and atmosphere, reflecting on the landscape. Understanding how it all works together in any composition, is our goal. It is as much about colour harmony and relationships, as well as perspective of colour.

Over five sessions, we will create some small quick paintings and then settle into a larger, atmospheric painting.

The Four Gentlemen

Sumi-e is a centuries old art form originally dating from China. In its fundamental quality it is not a representational art but one of “essences ”. In this approach no brush stroke is to be taken without first having an understanding of what one is painting.

The artists strives to capture the essence of the subject with minimal strokes and only black ink. Nothing extraneous must be in the composition, which will only distract from the subject. Sumi-e is the art of meditation and contemplation brought to bear upon a subject to be rendered in a painting.

All sumi painters begin with practising “The Four Gentleman” and return to these regularly. These compositions of bamboo, plum, orchid and chrysanthemum contain all the brush stokes needed to paint anything in the world or your imagination.

In this class we will begin with “The Four Gentleman” and through this understand the nature of materials that are used:
• Ink
• Ink stones
• Brushes
• Paper types

This will be a hands on/practical class that will allow you to begin to see your own style in this ancient art form.
